New Playing field in Independence Garden
Sliema Local Council is proud to announce that works on the new playing field at Independence Garden are to start in the coming weeks. The top priority of the project is accessibility for persons with disability.
Well done for the initiative and hope other local councils will follow!!! However I would like to take the opportunity to point out some important feedback that all children with a disability would be able to make use of the equipment put in the playing field. There were several local councils who emphesised on this matter however once visited by the parents they were surprised that the equipment installed is just a ramp with some cubes/blocks attached to panels for someone to play around with. No wheelchair swing or wheelchiar merry-go-round is installed. Presently the only two playing fields which have the said equipment is the 'kitchen garden' which has a merry-go-round and the Ta' Qali park which has an accessible wheelchair swing. Both parks have been suggested by us parents and we were pleased that our suggestions were heard and now being used by several children with different abilites. These two parks are ideal for a child using a wheelchair since the environment is fully accessed and the child can also enjoy the rides and not just be a spectator. Once again Well done for the initiative!!!!!
The park will be accessible, and will include swings, see-saw and swing for wheelchair amongst its features. SLC consulted with experts in the field before proceeding, to make sure that the park is as accessible as possible .
